Itching, scabbing and inflamed piercing holes after wearing earrings can be a sign of an allergy to nickel, cadmium and lead. The most common metal allergy, with an estimated 20% of the global population suffering with this. The exact cause of why nickel causes a reaction is unknown, but many discover this after getting their ears pierced. I did! At 14 years old, my recently beloved piercings began to turn red, itch and scab over. I ended up getting the stud backs trapped inside my ear piercings, with my mother (thankfully a qualified medical professional) having to extract the earring backs from the partially close piercing holes. Even decades later, wearing the wrong earring material can trigger a reaction (I'll post a blog soon discussing how to minimise a reaction and the best treatments)
Contact dermatitis in no joke! It's at best itchy and at worst can induce swelling, pus and scabbing.
At Purple Elf Jewellery, when sourcing suppliers of ear hooks, we stick to suppliers based in the UK or EU, where there are strict regulations. Our plated metal earrings are nickel, lead and cadmium free. We also offer fully hypoallergenic options to our ranges, which includes Titanium and Plastic. We're working on adding the full range to our website, but in the interim, you can find all hypoallergenic options in our Etsy shop: https://www.etsy.com/shop/PurpleElfJewellery
